Smith takes top actor prize for his role as Venus and Serena Williams’ father Richard as he guides his daughters to tennis success
Will Smith has won the Oscar for best actor at the 94th Academy Awards, currently under way at the Dolby theatre in Los Angeles.
Smith won the prize for his role as Richard Williams, father of tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams, in King Richard, a biopic that outlined Williams’ role in the sisters’ stellar success. The film was directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and stars Smith in the title role, alongside Aunjanue Ellis as his wife Brandy, Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton as Venus and Serena, and Jon Bernthal as tennis coach Rick Macci. Venus and Serena Williams acted as executive producers on the project.
Smith had already been responsible for the evening’s major drama after he appeared to hit presenter Chris Rock after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada-Pinkett-Smith.
“Take my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth,” he yelled at Rock, twice. In the advert breaks, Smith could be seen wiping tears from his eyes and being comforted by others in the room.
Taking to the stage, Smith addressed the controversy with reference to the character he played in King Richard.
“Oh man,” he said. “Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family. In this time in my life, in this moment, I am overwhelmed by what God is calling on me to do and be in this world.
“Making this film I got to protect Aunjanue Ellis, who is one of the strongest, most delicate people I’ve ever met. I got to protect Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton, the two actresses who played Venus and Serena.
“I’m being called on in my life to love people and to protect people and to be a river to my people. And I know we do what we do you and gotta be able to take abuse and have people talk crazy about you. In this business, people abuse you and you gotta smile and pretend like that’s ok.
“I wanna be a vessel for love, I wanna say thank you to Venus and Serena and the entire Williams family for entrusting me with your story. I wanna be an ambassador for that kind of love and care and concern.
“I wanna apologise to the Academy and to all my fellow nominees. This is beautiful moment and I’m crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me it’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people, the entire cast and crew.”
Continuing to wipe away tears, Smith said: “Art imitates life! I looked like the crazy father, just like they said. But love will make you do crazy things.”
Smith finished by thanking his mother, who he said couldn’t attend as she was busy with her knitting cirlce. “Thank you for this moment,” he concluded. “I hope the Academy invites me back.”
Smith has already won numerous awards for his role in the film, including best actor at the Bafta and Critics Choice awards, and best actor (drama) at the Golden Globes. At the Oscars, Smith has been successful at the third attempt, having been nominated twice before for best actor: for Ali in 2002 and The Pursuit of Happyness in 2007.

Will Smith has received his third and fourth Oscar nominations yesterday, earning his place on the Best Actor list for his role in King Richard, and sharing in the film’s Best Picture nomination with Tim White and Trevor White.
Smith produced the film and played Richard Williams, the father of tennis players Venus and Serena Williams, in a story charting the early days of their careers. His role in the movie has been a favorite with critics and guilds all season long. In addition to pending nominations from SAG, BAFTA, and Critics Choice, Smith has already claimed prizes from several critics groups. It is a long-overdue return to the Oscars spotlight for Smith, whose turn in Warner Bros.’ King Richard, written by Zach Baylin and directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, has been recognized 15 years on from his last citation by the Motion Picture Academy.

The veteran actor was first nominated for a Golden Globe back in 1993 for his role in Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
King Richard which was released in November 2021, received gleaming reviews from critics and with awards season officially underway the biopic has already picked up a couple of awards. Will Smith is no longer just a five-time Golden Globe nominee, now the actor can call himself a winner. Smith took home the Best Actor in a Motion Picture-Drama award on Sunday for his powerful performance in King Richard.
Last year during the global press conference, Smith opened up about just how honored he was to portray Serena and Venus’ father in the film and admitted Richard was someone he fell in love with because of how he protected his daughters.
“I fell in love with Richard Williams—that was 20 something years ago and when the opportunity to be a part of this came up that was the first thing that I remembered. I knew I wanted to show a father protecting a daughter like that to the world,” he said.
The 53-year-old Smith was first nominated for a Golden Globe back in 1993 and again in 1994 for Best Actor in a TV series for his iconic role in Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The actor prevailed against an impressive group to capture his first prestigious accolade which included, Mahershala Ali (Swan Song), Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog) and Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth).
Smith isn’t the only actor in the film that took home an award over the weekend. Saniyya Sidney who plays Venus, won Best Performance By a Young Actor and she’s also received a nomination for Best Young Actor at the Critics Choice Awards. The film was up for six awards in total at the Critics Choice Awards.
Currently, King Richard boasts a spectacular 90 percent rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with many commending the performances of both Smith and Sidney. With the Academy Awards approaching, the nominees will be announced on February 8.
Will Smith has been attached to a new project that will see him playing a crime lord. The film, titled Fast & Loose, is a drama that has Deadpool 2 and Hobbs & Shaw director David Leitch attached to helm the project. According to Deadline, a fierce bidding war is currently taking place between all the major Hollywood studios to snap up the rights to the planned movie. The logline for the project can be read below.
“After the leader of an upper-echelon criminal organization suffers memory loss from an attack, he reunites with his crew, only to find that things aren’t what he thinks they are. When John Riley (Will Smith) wakes up in Tijuana after being left for dead with absolutely no memory, he follows a string of clues to uncover his identity discovering he’s been living two different lives: one, as a super-successful crime kingpin, surrounded by beautiful women, expensive toys, and a lavish lifestyle and the other as an undercover CIA agent, but with a puny salary, no family or home life whatsoever, and zero trappings of success. The problem is, he can’t remember which of these two personas is his true identity, and, more importantly, which life he really wants to live.”
While the premise of the movie can make for a grounded, serious drama, along the lines of The Bourne Identity or Memento, David Leitch is known for injecting loads of style and flourish into his movies, which include Atomic Blonde and John Wick. Leitch is also noted for being able to use the natural charisma of his leading actors to create memorable characters. So a team-up between him and Will Smith feels like a match made in heaven.
While Smith made his name in the 90s playing heroic roles, lately he has been leaning more into gray or anti-hero portrayals, such as the drunk and depressed superhero Hancock, the supervillain Deadshot, or an assassin in Gemini Man. Still, even the evilest roles manage to somehow become sympathetic characters in Smith’s hands, and that is probably going to happen in Fast and Loose as well.
One thing that the movie will doubtless feature is amazing action scenes. Leitch has proven he knows how to create an action sequence that feels real, even when it is taking place between an immortal assassin like Deadpool and a cybernetic warrior from the future like Cable. Leitch’s fondness for injecting humor into his stories should also find a great use for Smith’s excellent comic timing.
Before the actor jumps into Fast and Loose, however, Smith will be seen in his next star vehicle where he teams with filmmaker Antoine Fuqua in the runaway slave drama Emancipation that is being produced by Apple. The movie will scratch a particular itch for Smith since he turned down the leading role in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained because the actor could not see eye-to-eye with Tarantino over the “vengeance” theme of the film. This comes from Deadline.
